DJI Mavic Air is now here!!!

DJI announced a new drone this morning and in DJI fashion, blows everyone away with yet another groundbreaking drone for the masses. I say for the masses because this drone has all the capabilities of the Mavic Pro, but in a compact size of the Spark. They basically merged the two drones together and created an amazing looking drone that looks like it should have a Tesla or BMW logo on it. The new sleek design, fold out arms and compact size os the air gives you no more excuses to not have one of these in your bag. I'm not going to go into to much details about all the features in this write up, but I will talk about some things I like and some things I will need to see once I get one.

Screen Shot 2018-01-23 at 9.59.46 AM.png

Because I already own the Mavic Pro and Spark, where does the Air fit in my bag and does it replace the Mavic Pro? The Mavic Pro is an all around beast of a drone and I feel will still be in my bag until I get used to trusting two major things in my opinion. Those two things are the ability to withstand wind (how does the gimbal hold up in high winds) and distance with wifi compared to radio.

Screen Shot 2018-01-23 at 10.00.19 AM.png

The one thing I hated about the Spark with the wifi signal. DJI said they now have a new enhanced wifi to give the Mavic Air a flight distance of over two miles. I never really fly that far anyways, but it will take some time to trust wifi signal at a far distance.

Screen Shot 2018-01-23 at 10.09.55 AM.png

I'm not going to get into to much details about gesture controls because I never use them. It's good to know that it has been enhanced and is a lot more responsive and now offers the user more control over distance of drone.

Screen Shot 2018-01-23 at 10.32.05 AM.png

Because I already own the Spark and Mavic Pro, I get excited about the other little things that didn't get much air time during the announcement. The fact you can remove the sticks is a huge deal. For some it may be a small thing, but anytime you can slim down your carry is a big deal.

Screen-Shot-2018-01-23-at-10.31.31-AM.jpg

Another feature I really liked is the 1080p at 120fps. This of course will only be good during nice bright days as the faster shutter will struggle significantly in low light because of the small sensor size. But to have 120fps to slow down action will be really nice and dramatic.

Screen Shot 2018-01-23 at 10.00.08 AM.png

So who is this for? I feel like if you already have a Mavic Pro, this might be one you can pass on (maybe wait for the Mavic 2) and not feel to left out of the cool crowd. But if you have a Spark or don't have a drone, this is a huge upgrade and is a perfect drone for everyone. This is where DJI wants to position this drone. This is the drone that doesn't have any major weak points and is small enough to carry around with you daily.

PGYTECH Hard Case for the DJI Spark

PGYTECH Hard Case for the DJI Spark

I've reviewed a bunch of cases for the DJI Spark in the past and this is definitely one high quality case. They paid a lot of attention to the details of the case and created a very secure, easy to use case that holds all of your DJI Spark fly more combo accessories. This case does come with a higher price tag which may put off some people, but there's for sure quality behind that price. Also, this case is made to hold all of the fly more accessories so know that this is a larger case. If you want something small and compact to transport your DJI Spark, check out some of my other case videos on the channel.

DJI Mavic Pro Remote Control - Tips and Settings I Use

DJI Mavic Pro Remote Control - Tips and Settings I Use ► In this video, I talk about the DJI Mavic Pro remote control antenna and custom button settings. Not many people talk about the remote control, so I wanted to do a video about some of the custom settings I use on the remote and also about some use cases. Also, after watching numerous videos, it seems like a lot of flyers have their antennas positioned in a way that's not optimal for good transmission and reception. These tips work on the DJI Mavic Pro, Mavic Pro Platinum and Mavic Pro Alpine White. ----------------------------------------------------- ▼LIST OF GEAR USED BELOW: Video shot on: http://amzn.to/2nGYg2X Bendy Tripod: http://amzn.to/2eM5cZC DJI Mavic Pro Alpine White Combo: https://goo.gl/Gnz6Lx DJI Mavic Pro Platinum: https://goo.gl/fDNx1U DJI Mavic Pro Drone: https://goo.gl/fq1bVN Backpack I use: http://amzn.to/2uB9kST Freewell DJI Mavic Compact Rugged Waterproof Hard Case (Blue): http://amzn.to/2wGBZns PolarPro DJI Mavic 6-Pack Cinema: http://amzn.to/2oSSKq5 Audio Digital Recorder: http://amzn.to/2ydmXs7 Microphone: http://amzn.to/2oCAamj Apple iPad Air 2: http://amzn.to/2sSYJhn Tablet holder: http://www.mavmount.com (Use promo code flytpath) ▼VIEW REVIEWED PRODUCTS ON ONE PAGE: https://www.amazon.com/shop/flytpath

December in San Diego, CA

Another beautiful day in Americas Finest City. Here's a shot I took at the Children's Pool in La Jolla, CA.

Tesla Light Painting with the DJI Mavic Pro and Lume Cubes

Tesla Light Painting with the DJI Mavic Pro and Lume Cubes

After lighting up the Sunset Cliffs caves with my buddy Daniel, I've been due for another fun project. This time around, I found out Lume Cube was releasing a new mount for the DJI Mavic Pro. I reached out to the Lume Cube team to see if this product was available to test and luckily for me, they had a prototype unit available. This new mount is set to release early December 2017 so I was stoked to get a chance to play with these before then. Now the challenge was to come up with a unique idea that I could use the Mavic and Cubes on.

I've been a huge fan of Elon Musk and the Teslas for the past few years. My friend and fellow photographer Spencer Pablo just got his Tesla Model X wrapped flat black. The first thing that came to mind was to see if I can light up the Tesla at night with the Lumes.

geartesla.jpg

We jumped in his Model X and headed off to location #1. Spencer recently photographed his Tesla's here so and I knew it would be a nice night shot with the downtown skyline in the background. The only concern was that this location was fairly close to the airport. After checking a few apps, the actually location we planned to shoot at seemed to be somewhat clear for take off.

location1.jpg

We got to location #1 and launched the app instantly is make sure we were clear for take off. Unfortunately, we were literary right at the edge of the no take circle in the DJI app. We tried walking around and got the same warning. Cannot take off.

nofly.jpg

It was a race against the sun at this point so we needed to make a location change and make that change quickly. Scott Davenport mentioned a spot near Balboa Park that might work so we headed over there as fast as we could. It wasn't to hard getting there fast with the Model X :)

location2.jpg

It was all smiles when we took the Mavic up for a test flight with the Lumes Cubes. With only about 20 minutes before the sun crosses the horizon, we moved the cars into place and got the cameras set up. And yes, we had 2 Teslas this evening as Spencers wife brought out her Tesla Model S to join in on the fun.

camera_setup.jpg

After a couple tweaks of the car angles, the cameras were set. We wanted to capture images from the same spot as the sun went down, all the way past sunset so we would have a range of images to choose from as far as background went. Spencer manned the camera as I piloted the lights and Mavic Pro.

As the sun went down and the skyline lights came on, we began flying, lighting and shooting non-stop. I would position lights over the main lines of the Tesla, making sure we highlight the curves of the body.  Spencer would take some long exposure photos at each position with the idea of compositing the highlighted pieces together later in post.

After some Lightroom and Photoshop work, here is the final 20+ layer composition (plus multiple color correction layers) photo. We had a blast shooting, lighting and compositing this photo and I can't wait to set up another creative project soon.

I hope you got some value my video and this blog. Below are some links for you in case you wanted more information on the products we used.

So the new DJI Mavic Pro Platinum is finally here and I was extremely anxious to get this video going. DJI marketed the new Platinum as an enhanced version of the original Mavic Pro by upgrading the electronic speed controllers and propellers. DJI said that these updates now extend the flight time 3 minutes. In this video, I put the original Mavic Pro side by side with the Platinum to see if there's really a difference worth talking about with the new Platinum Mavic Pro.
